Today we took the local train out along the coast and through several small towns to the beachside resort of Fuengirola. Wrap your mouth around that one and chew on it.
There's a lovely long beach to walk along, with all the usual shops to attract tourists and a multitude of places to eat. It's the low season right now, and all the shop keepers and restaurant owners are quick to invite you in as you walk by.

Beautiful seawall walk if you don't like walking on sand |
We saw these colourful little metal boats filled with sand and wondered what they were. A little further along, we came to a sign informing us that they could be booked for events for 5 euros for a half a boat. You must apply to the police department a minimum of one week in advance. Turns out they are for lighting fires for a bbq. As we walked along, we noticed a number of the little restaurants on the beach had mini versions of the boat where they were cooking sardines and other fish over an open fire. Cute.

How could we resist a restaurant that welcomes us so completely? |

Or that has such a fun name and charming exterior? |
And as we got to the end of the beach, we rounded a corner . . . and of course, there is an old castle ruin. This one is called Sohail Castle and according to Wikipedia, it was built in AD 956 by Abd-ar-Rahman III (an Iberian prince of the time). The town renovated it in 2000, and it is now used for concerts and other festivals. Excavated stone ruins at the western base of the hill date back to the Roman Empire at least 300 BC.
