Ronda, Spain

Nov 27
Today we took a bus trip to the town of Ronda - unfortunately, it was pouring rain, blowing hard and really cold.  So we didn't really see as much of it as we would have liked to.  It's a small town inland, set in the mountains and about a 90 minute drive from Malaga where we are staying.  We were looking forward to visiting caves, cave paintings, and many other historic monuments and places, but I guess that will have to be another time.

It's a very historic town with cave paintings from the Palaeolithic age,  rock dolmens (like we saw in Jersey), Roman monuments, Arab walls and baths . . . but we missed all that.  It's built on the clifftop of a stunning gorge, and you access the 'old town' via the 'new bridge' that was started in 1751 and finished in 1793.  It's 98 meters high and the mind boggles to think how anyone considered building and then built this beauty.

I'm glad they had a safety railing here. It was a loooong way down

Ronda Gorge.  That's the river way down there.

The town is lovely and I wish we'd been able to withstand the cold, wind and rain and got out to see more of it, but it's definitely on a go-to list if we ever come back this way.

If I had room in my suitcase . . .

We took shelter in a little tapas bar . . .

. . . And admired the rather incredible wiring job on this house across the street

We stopped briefly in the town of Marbella on the coast on the way back to Malaga - apparently this is where the rich and famous hang out when they are in this part of Spain.  We didn't stay long, but did see some really beautiful spots while we were here.  The old quarter "Orange Square" has a lovely old church and lots of picturesque alleyways.  And the Avenida del Mar has the most glorious golden yellow marble 'floor' with 10 Salvador Dali sculptures along its pathway.  The pictures aren't great - the sun was going down while we were there.
